Independent external evaluation consultants offer specific skillsets, perspectives, and experiences with similar initiatives. As evaluation projects grow in scope and complexity, external consultants may find themselves in uncharted waters with respect to their roles. Do they serve as navigators identifying directions and tracking progress, harbour pilots ensuring safe passage through a difficult spot, first mates supporting leadership, engineers providing a useful but invisible service (unless something goes wrong), or all or none of the above? How do we negotiate these roles, both on shore before the journey and in the midst of rolling seas? This Ignite presentation will share stories from previous and ongoing voyages for seasoned mariners and novices alike.
