Stories fulfil many functions in Indigenous communities; they are a memory tool for capturing tribal knowledge, a teaching tool for learning about life, a mechanism that affirms Indigenous knowledge and experience and a device that connects people through time -- to the past, present and future.

In her 2019 key note presentation, Nan Wehipeihana positioned Indigenous-led as embracing the essence of Indigenous evaluation. One of the challenges issued was to increase cultural competence in evaluation and address power relationships in evaluation. Nan argued that a paradigm shift was a necessary precursor if evaluation practice change was to occur. For example, from evaluator as expert to community as expert and from independent measures to culturally based measures.

Drawing from a rich repository of cultural knowledge and evaluation practice with Maori and Indigenous communities, Nan will share stories to assist evaluators to prepare for and navigate shifting paradigms and stormy seas of evaluation with Indigenous peoples and communities.
