Developing and implementing environmental campaigns and integrating the needs of people who rely on natural resources for their livelihoods necessitates a complex set of decisions and actions that may not always represent a straight line to achieving an outcome. Creating relationships and understanding the priorities of communities and at the same time working to repair the damage that human activities have caused is always a delicate balance, that requires identifying shared outcomes and often compromise. External factors, such as government mandates, regulatory changes and markets also need to be considered. Many environmental objectives or commitments made at various levels of government originate from international commitments, yet these often fail to resonate at the local level. Making change that over time has a high likelihood of tangible, positive environmental and biodiversity outcomes can only happen through working across silos, building bridges and constant recalibration of the path forward. Evaluation is both explicit and implicit in this process, and needs to be integrated at every step.
